The same film can feel different depending on the screening format. Start with what you want from your visit: a bigger image, enveloping sound, moving seats or pictures stretching to either side.

How the formats differ
IMAX
A cinema system designed around its screen, projection and sound. Equipment, including laser projection, varies by location.
Some films include scenes with an expanded image in IMAX. The visible image depends on both the film and the auditorium: not every IMAX screening uses the same aspect ratio.
Dolby Cinema
Combines Dolby Vision images with Dolby Atmos sound.
Consider it for dark scenes, bright highlights and immersive sound. Dolby Atmos alone does not make an auditorium Dolby Cinema. Other auditorium brands offering Dolby Vision should also be distinguished from Dolby Cinema.
4DX
Moving seats and environmental effects such as wind and water synchronised with the film.
An option for experiencing action physically. Effects vary by film. It is a different system from MX4D, so check which films and cinemas support each format.
MX4D
MediaMation’s immersive system synchronises seat movements and effects with the film.
Like 4DX, it adds physical effects, but it is a separate brand. Check the specific format rather than relying on a generic “4D” label. The cinema publishes entry conditions such as minimum height.
SCREENX
Extends the image from the front screen onto the side walls.
The appeal is the wider view. Side-wall images do not necessarily run throughout the film. SCREENX is distinct from ULTRA 4DX, which also includes motion effects.
ULTRA 4DX
Combines 4DX physical effects with SCREENX’s three-sided presentation.
Choose this for moving seats and side-wall images together. Look for the ULTRA 4DX label rather than assuming a standard 4DX screening includes SCREENX.
Before you book
Are IMAX and 4DX always 3D?
